Obituary for Dorothy Louise Rapert (Reed)
Dorothy Louise Reed Rapert, 90, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at the Randolph County Nursing Home in Pocahontas. She had been working to overcome the effects of a stroke she suffered in March.
Dorothy was born in Benton, Arkansas on Friday, January 10, 1930 to Margaret Moree Cate Reed and Lucian Raymond Reed. She grew up in Benton and attended Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, and then went on to earn her Master’s degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Carver School in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dorothy enjoyed teaching math and science to middle school and high school students in Arkansas and Texas throughout her forty-year career. She finally retired in Pocahontas in 1995.
Although Dorothy loved teaching, her true love was the time she spent acting in plays and volunteering for the Imperial Dinner Theater in Pocahontas. In addition to her active theater life, she also enjoyed volunteering with the St. Bernard’s Five Rivers Hospital Auxiliary, as well as attending First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years.
Dorothy was a true asset to Pocahontas with her robust volunteer life. She served in the local Cancer Society, the GFWC Pocahontas Women’s Club, the Northeast Arkansas Chorale, the Red Cross Emergency Disaster Team, and was even once recognized as the Randolph County Citizen of the Year. She would often joke that she had to retire from teaching because her job was interfering with her social life.
She enjoyed traveling and was able to visit every state in the United States along with bi-annual trips to Ouachita Baptist each fall and spring for alumna events.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Daniel (Nancy) Rapert, of Pleasanton, Texas and her daughter, Deborah (Rupert) Yen, of Memphis, Tennessee; two granddaughters, Morgan (Brendan) Pattison of Memphis, and Madison (Rich) Yen-Collins, of Denver, CO; two great-grandchildren, Ellie Rose Pattison and Jude Wylder Pattison.
Due to the COVID pandemic, memorial services for Dorothy will be lived-streamed from First Baptist Church, in Pocahontas, on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Burial will take place on Sunday, August 16, 2020, at the Old Rosemont Cemetery, in Benton, Arkansas.
