Obituary for James Ivan McDowell

James Ivan McDowell, 75, of Pocahontas, Arkansas, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the St. Francis Hospital, in Memphis, Tennessee. James was born on August 23, 1944, in Piggott, Arkansas, to Edgar Raymond and Eva Lee Rogers McDowell.

On March 19, 1965, James married the love of his life, Carol Johnson. They were sweethearts since the eighth grade and were married for over fifty-five years.

James was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, son, uncle, cousin, neighbor, and friend. He was a member of the Sutton Free Will Baptist Church.

James is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayne, Norman, and Larry McDowell; and four sisters, Omagene Hubbard, Joyce Tweedy, Doris McDowell, and Jo VanNada.

James is survived by two sons, Jamie (Lisa) McDowell, of Hoxie, and Joey (Chandra) McDowell, of Pocahontas; one brother, Ray (Ann) McDowell, of Corning; one sister, Willa Dean Speer, of Dyer, Tennessee; grandchildren, Lindsey McDowell, of Nashville, Tennessee, Taylor (Tyler) Trover, of Bernie, Missouri, Madilyn McDowell, of Pocahontas, Ian McDowell, of Pocahontas, and Colby Harris, of Batesville; two great grandchildren, Aubree and Tripp Trover, of Bernie, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones, and Hollie McDowell, of Batesville.

All services will be held at the Sutton Free Will Baptist Church, near Pocahontas, Arkansas, on Sunday, July 5, 2020. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. James’ funeral will immediately follow, beginning at 4:00 pm; Kevin Barnett, officiating. Burial will follow in the Sutton Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Steve Speer, Ian McDowell, Tim Ennis, Bart White, Gavin McDowell, and Benny Johnson. Honored to serve as honorary pallbearers are Mac Ennis, Rick Prater, Mike Richardson, Danny Johnson, and John Buckley.

Due to directives from the Arkansas Department of Health, and the Governor of Arkansas, several COVID-19 protective measures will be in place. There will be signs posted at entrances. Some of the requirements include, wearing a mask, signing the book of contacts, and maintaining safe distances. Other requirements will be clearly posted.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made, in James' name, to the St. Jude Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
