Obituary for Urita Kay Atkins (Burgess)

Urita Kay Burgess Atkins, 68, of Pocahontas, Arkansas, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at the NEA Baptist Hospital, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, with her husband and children by her side. Kay was born on November 26, 1951, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, to Zan and Ulelar Patterson Burgess.

On May 9, 1976, Kay married the love of her life, Jimmy David Atkins. They were married for forty-three years. Kay was a loving wife, mother, daughter, nanny, great nanny, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Kay was known for her laughter and her love for making people laugh.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents, Zan and Ulelar Patterson Burgess; brother, Gib Burgess; and three nephews, Paul Smith, Ronnie Burgess, and Randy Kerley.

Kay is survived by her husband, Jimmy Atkins, of the home; son, Robert (Yolanda) Atkins, of Maynard; daughter, Tammy (Dross) Hunter, of the home; adopted son, Tracy (Amber) Chesser, of Maynard; six grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart and they loved their nanny more than she ever knew, Alexis Seehaver, Tanner Atkins, Madyson Williams, Dawson Goins, Kaycie Atkins, and Morgan Williams; three great grandchildren, Asher Williams, Tyler Atkins, and Oaklyee Seehaver; two brothers, Don (Sharon) Burgess, of Pocahontas, and Michael Burgess, of Pocahontas; four sisters, Shirley Marlett, of Maynard, Lynda (Park) Leathers, of Pocahontas, Carolyn (Bryon) Morgan, of Pocahontas, and Kathy (Rick) Reed, of Pocahontas; and many nieces and nephews.

All services will be held in the chapel of the Fears Family Funeral Home, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Kay’s funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm, on Friday, December 13, 2019; Dan Avery, officiating. Burial will follow in the Pitman Cemetery, near Supply.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Brian Junkersfeld, Tracy Chesser, Todd Griffin, Rick Griffin, Shawn Griffin, Michael Gifford, Tony Smith, and Adam Perry.

The family wishes to respectfully designate Mark Atkins and Chris Tyler as honorary pallbearers.
